The screen on the right side of the door walks users through the process. Powered by RFID technology, when a book is removed from the shelves and the door to the kiosk is closed, the title is checked out to the library card. The kiosk would hold about 200 items and users simply scan their library cards to unlock the door to the kiosk and browse the books.
If the Commerce Township Community Library is a grant recipient, an order would be placed for the kiosk shortly thereafter and would arrive within 12 weeks. The grant awards announcement will occur later this month. The Commerce Township Community Library is applying for the latter. The Library of Michigan will be distributing ARPA funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services primarily through two grant programs: the ARPA Capacity Grant and the ARPA Equipment Grant.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services has awarded the Library of Michigan $4,171,573 from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA.) To achieve the American Rescue Plan Act’s purposes, this funding is to be used by September 30, 2022, in helping communities respond directly and immediately to the pandemic, as well as to related economic and community needs through equitable approaches. “These residents sometimes have difficulty coming to the library, so this will be more convenient for them.” “We are collaborating with First and Main and we are so excited for the possibility of bringing this service to their residents,” said Alyson Lobert, library director, Commerce Township Community Library.
The funding will go toward the purchase of a kiosk of library materials to be placed at First & Main. The Commerce Township Library received approval from the board of trustees to pursue a $38,010 grant from the Library of Michigan.
